Delivering high-quality and all-natural beef, poultry and organic grain products.

Located west of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota, the Brakstad farm has been family-owned and operated for three generations. In 2010, Lance and Robyn Bragstad were gifted with their first pair of Holstein calves. What began as a small hobby farm, it has quickly grown into a reputable all-natural farming business known as Brakstad Natural Farms.

Beef & Chicken Products

Brakstad Natural Farms has made a conscious pledge to keep all beef and poultry processing local to support area businesses and community members. We've partnered with the most reputable processors to ensure your custom-cut beef products are handled with the utmost care and attention to detail that they deserve.

On average, most beef is categorized into large primal sections that are broken down into smaller retail cuts. Shortly before processing, you'll receive a phone-call from your notified beef processor to customize your cuts for the order. They can assist you with a variety of questions related to cut recommendations based upon portion sizes, as well as, pick-up dates.

Our cattle are also never transported before processing. Transportation can subsequently cause the cattle to release hormones as a sign of stress, which can significantly alter the taste of the final product. We also limit our herd size to ensure ample grazing conditions. In return, this keeps our fields and cattle healthy by allowing the fields to replenish so that cattle do not require antibiotics to fight against ailments caused from confined grazing conditions. We believe that a happy, healthy herd results in a better, tastier product.

Our chickens are processed at a USDA licensed facility and available whole. We don't confine our chickens to coops, but give them plenty of room to roam through the farm yard. We don't rush growth at the expense of quality at Brakstad's Green Acres. This gives you piece-of-mind that you're creating a meal that's as healthy as it is delicious. We stock fresh young chickens at the local farmer's market, when in season. We also offer farm-fresh eggs by the dozen nearly year round, with higher production in the spring.

Grains & Produce

We're proud to say we've expanded our produce production within the last year. Our high tunnels grow everything from micro greens and kale to cucumbers and peppers. As a result, we're happy to offer Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) packages weekly to our customers. This is a great option to get local, fresh produce from spring to fall. CSA packages are an excellent way to introduce variety into your cooking and share your favorite recipes.

All grains are ordered from an organic supplier and milled by hand. They are then portioned and packaged.

If you have specific questions about our produce, grains, or our CSA program, please contact us.

Questions

How much does a typical quarter weigh and cost?

The weight and the cost of your order depends upon the final hanging weight of the steer your order is processed from. The typical finished hanging weight of a Jersey is between 425 – 500 lbs. If you order a quarter from a 500 lb. steer, your cost will be the current price-per-pound multiplied by 125 lbs.

Can I specify what cuts I want?

Yes. Once your portion of the steer has been transported to a local processing facility, they will contact you regarding the cuts they have available. It is important that you give us a valid, working phone number to ensure the processing facility can easily contact you during any point of the processing phase.

When is the next processing day?

We only process our cattle, which is typically done in batches of four or more. Once they have met their proper finishing weight, we will post all relevant information on our Facebook Page at 'Brakstad Green Acres' (i.e., the number of cattle being processed, the number of cattle still available, processing dates, etc.).

How much room do I need in my freezer?

This depends upon the size of the steer your order is being processed from. If you purchased a quarter from a 400 lb. steer, at finished weight, you can expect to fit your cuts into a large laundry sized basket. This will generally fill an entire freezer compartment of a standing-upright refrigerator.

When can I pick-up my order?

Your processing facility will contact you when your order is ready. This can vary depending upon the time of the year and how busy they are. When you speak with them about your custom cuts, they will give you a tentative date as to when your order will be ready. We ask that our customers remain courteous to all processing facilities by picking up their orders on time. This will also eliminate additional storage fees.
